PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE BY ALLISON HYDRAULICS LTD

Preventative Maintenance (PM) is a service that is becoming increasingly popular especially in today’s industrial market place where there is often no built-in allowance for breakdowns. Here at Allison Hydraulics we believe we are in a superb position to provide PM packages for UK businesses. We have a dedicated team of experienced hydraulic engineers operating from branches at Leeds, and Newcastle whose specialist skills are saving companies thousands of pounds every week.

Companies that opt for a PM package are typically those engaged in the supply of components to the motor industry and are often working to ‘Just in Time’ circumstances. In recent years we have seen the move towards ‘Just in Time’ supply in many other industries and as a result companies are seeking the advice of PM specialists for their hydraulic systems. With a visit from one of our engineers PM packages can be clearly seen as an advantage and that a reputable company must be appointed for the package to be a success. With 25 years experience in the hydraulics industry it is no surprise that companies are turning to Allison Hydraulics for their PM packages.

Essentially these PM packages involve the close and frequent monitoring of all measurable parameters within the hydraulic system. Most, if not all of these measurements are taken whilst the machine is still in production and are non-intrusive. As part of this regular monitoring, oil samples are taken and inspected for particle contamination. Oil contamination and high oil temperatures are two of the most common factors that can lead to system failure and time spent controlling these two areas is time well spent. Surprisingly, one of the most common causes of oil contamination is that of air borne particles finding their way into the system through inadequate and sometimes non-existent tank air breathers. These fine particles can easily clog up filters with disastrous consequences.

Probably the most important ingredient to operating a successful PM service is having experienced hydraulic personnel to correctly interpret the findings. For example, if we discover a machine running at an excessively high temperature we need to determine the cause of this, it may be an incorrectly set pump, a relief valve not being unloaded due to a signal fault or just a clogged radiator on a fan cooler. Generally this sort of diagnosis in not within the capabilities of the multi disciplined maintenance technician.

Another important aspect of the PM service is that of written reports. These reports will record all of the measurements taken, thereby giving a history for comparison and will also show the improvements made to the oil condition and can be shown in graph form. There will obviously be occasions when corrective work needs to be carried out to prevent a worsening situation and potential breakdown. The only way this service can be successful is if both service provider and customer work in partnership and the customer takes action on the recommendations of the hydraulic engineer. Generally speaking all parties involved with the PM packages provided by Allison Hydraulics are pleased with the results, but only wish they had taken specialist advice sooner to save their time and money.
